Our concrete patios, driveways, and sidewalks take a beating, and if they’re looking worse for wear, a concrete overlay could be the solution.
Although concrete is a very durable, tough material, it is also very porous. Over time, exposure to water, freezing, and other harsh conditions can start to break down the surface of the concrete, especially if it is unsealed.
Let’s take a look at what concrete overlays are, how they can be used, and how long they last.
What an Overlay Is
When it comes to concrete, an overlay is simply a thin coating of concrete applied to a surface. There are many different manufacturers with varying products, each with a proprietary blend of
portland cements, aggregates, polymer resins, and polymer additives. The polymer is a key component, as it is the magic ingredient that helps bind everything together and makes the overlay stick to the underlying surface. With such a wide range of products, there is naturally an equally wide range of applications, and you can select the blend you need for your desired look, texture, or purpose.
How are Concrete Overlays Used?
One way these overlays are used is to repair existing damaged concrete. For smaller, cosmetic flaws in the concrete, a thin layer of concrete can fill in and smooth out the imperfections. This is a much more affordable alternative to completely redoing the concrete. It’s important to note, however, that if the concrete is cracked or uneven due to surfacing up, these are symptoms of bigger issues. Whatever is causing the concrete to crack or surface up is going to have the same effect on the concrete overlay.
Another reason you might choose to resurface your concrete with an overlay is for aesthetic purposes. If you have standard, dull grey concrete, you can apply an overlay to spice things up. Stamping an overlay, for example, can create interesting textures with the finished appearance of stone, wood, brick, tile, or slate. Other types of overlay methods include microtopping, spray-down, and self-leveling. Cement overlays can also be applied indoors, adding a modern texture to walls, fireplaces, and other surfaces.
How Long Does an Overlay Last?
The key factor in the longevity of an overlay is the quality of the surface it is applied to. As mentioned above, if the underlying concrete is severely damaged and cracking, it is only a matter of time before any concrete resurfacing also cracks. Another factor is the preparation before applying the overlay. Common mistakes are failing to clean the concrete properly or to profile it adequately. With proper installation and maintenance, overlays are extremely durable and can last for decades, even in harsh climates.
Let the Pros at Hard Rock Concrete Coatings Help
While it is possible to resurface your concrete yourself, there are so many factors to consider. You’ll need to choose the right blend for your application, taking into account the integrity of the surface. If there is more pitting, for example, you may need a higher-build material or self-leveling concrete overlay. If you’re applying it to a vertical surface, you’ll need to consider the weight of the material on the wall and how much can be applied without sagging.
