Concrete is already pretty tough and durable. However, left untreated, cement can crack, crumble, chip, or otherwise be damaged. Additionally, concrete is very porous which means it absorbs liquids quite readily. The absorption of liquid can create stains and lead to damage. For instance, if the liquid that is absorbed is water and then temperatures fall, the water can freeze, expand, and destroy the concrete. On the other hand, if the liquid is something like oil then the concrete will be left stained.
One of the best and toughest ways to finish concrete so that it is protected is by applying a concrete epoxy coating. Epoxy coatings are especially great here in Utah. As noted, untreated concrete can absorb water and that water is likely to freeze and expand at some point here in Utah. Additionally, epoxy coatings are great for concrete garage floors because it protects the garage floor from oil stains and other damage. In Utah Winters, your car might bring in salt from off the roads. That salt can be very abrasive to your garage floor. A concrete epoxy coating will protect the cement.
Since epoxy coatings can be beautifully designed, some people think that cement epoxy is a paint. We’ll end the confusion right here: epoxy coatings are not paint. Instead, epoxy floor coatings are made of a latex acrylic product. There are some paints that have epoxy added, but that is still paint. Paint and epoxy coatings are two different things.
Concrete coatings have many benefits. Here are few of the great things about epoxy coatings:
- They look nice
- Durable
- Resilient
- Long lasting
- Easily cleaned
- Can be used to cover minor imperfections (avoid the cost of concrete repairs)
- Anti-dust
- Non-porous
- Option to add non-slip finish (This is recommended for Utah because of the rain we get in the spring and the snow in the Winter. Without the non-slip finish, epoxy coatings can be slippery when wet)
