Whether you have concrete countertops or a concrete driveway, concrete surfaces are often pone to rust stains. The common places you’ll find concrete are often exposed to metal which can lead to rust.
Rust stains are often caused by iron. This maybe from the fertilizer that you’re using. Plant foods and fertilizers contain metals and minerals that can lead to rust stains. If you’re consistently removing rust stains from your driveway, you may want to change out your fertilizer.
However, if you’re finding rust stains in your kitchen, it’s likely from metal products in your kitchen. When metal is combined with water, it can lead to rust stains. But not to worry, these stains can be removed and leave your concrete looking like new!
1. The Lemon Juice Method
The high concentration of citric acid in lemon juice is a great natural cleaning agent. This method requires just a few items you likely already have—water, dish soap, a rag, lemon juice, and wire brush.
- Rinse and wash the stained area with dish soap and water. Dry the surface before continuing.
- Pour lemon juice on the stained area.
- Let it sit for 15 minutes.
- Scrub with wire brush.
- Repeat as needed with tougher stains.
2. The Vinegar Method
Similar to lemon juice, vinegar has a high concentration of acid and as such works well as a natural cleaner. For this method, you’ll need water, dish soap, vinegar, a rag, and wire brush. You may also try a combination of the lemon juice and vinegar method to remove stubborn stains.
- Wash the stained area with warm water, dish soap, and a rag. Allow time to dry before continuing.
- Pour vinegar onto the stained surface.
- Let sit for 15 minutes.
- Rinse with cold water and scrub with a wire brush.
- Repeat as needed.
3. Rust Remover
There are many cleaning products out there dedicated to removing rust stains. These products may be a good solution to clearing away your stains, just be sure that they are safe to use on concrete. Because these products are usually heavy in chemicals when you use them—be sure to work in a well-ventilated area with gloves and eye protection. If you have access to a pressure washer, that may be a good option for spraying away the rust remover. The pressure of it may help to lift the stain.
4. Sealing Your Concrete
You can prevent stains from marking up your concrete surfaces when you seal your concrete. Most sealers will last two to three years. To apply a sealant, follow the directions below.
- Choose a day when it isn’t likely to rain.
- Wash the concrete with warm water and soap.
- Remove any current stains.
- Allow the concrete time to dry.
- Start in the corner and roll the sealant onto the concrete surface with a paint roller.
- Let the sealant rest for at least 48 hours before placing anything on the surface.
