How To Maintain Your Concrete

Because your outdoor concrete is exposed to many different types of elements, both extreme and mild (especially in Utah!), it is important to protect your investment. Concrete that is in tip-top shape not only makes a big difference in the curb appeal of your home, but it also makes your time spent outdoors more enjoyable. A sure and foolproof way to extend the life of your concrete is to make sure you are properly maintaining it.

Add a Protective Sealant

To help protect your concrete against extreme weather, damage to its surface, and spills or stains, make sure your concrete is sealed. There are several different types of concrete sealers out there. If you do it yourself, make sure you follow the provided instructions closely. You can explore more about sealants here.

Keep it Clean

Just like many things in life, the clearer things are, the longer they can last. Regularly remove dirt, grime, and debris with pressure washers, hoses with a power attachment or a good, old-fashion bristled brush or broom. Grab your necessary equipment and safety gear and make a Saturday of it. Read more about how to clean your concrete here and here.

Not only should you remove debris, but you should also keep your concrete clear of things that can rust (chains and other metal) or mold. Sealants will help protect against this, but for metal items like your grill or patio furniture that you can’t necessarily move, make sure to attack a stain the moment you spot one appearing.

Quickly Remove Spills

In line with regular cleanings, it is essential to address spills right away to avoid stains. Your concrete’s sealant will help protect against stains setting and absorbing, but it’s not a 100% guaranteed safety net. If you know your vehicle is leaking fluid or you are working with something that has stain potential (paint or stains, gasoline, etc.), you may want to park or work elsewhere. You can read more about removing oil stains here and about removing rust stains here.

Watch the Weight

The concrete slabs poured for patios, driveways, and sidewalks are typically not meant to support hefty items. They can, of course, handle the weight of machinery like your car, an ATV or side-by-side, lawnmowers, and other gear, but might not be able to stand up to the weight of larger vehicles or machinery. You should avoid having large trucks like moving or delivery trucks on your concrete.

Ditch Any Abrasive Products

To keep your concrete’s integrity intact and looking its best, make sure you avoid using harsh chemicals and deicers (including salts) on it. These products can attack and deteriorate the surface, making it easy for your concrete spall, chip, crack, or crumble. Concrete sealants can help protect against this potential damage; however, some of these chemicals and products are strong enough to penetrate the sealant and cause harm.
